California man builds dozens of desks for distance learners

September 30, 2020

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has taken a toll on all of us.Millions of children have started the 2020-2021 academic school year virtually. It’s a struggle many families are facing, with distance learning. Some families can’t afford the internet and some lack the space for kids to have an appropriate set-up for learning.

But One crafty dad in California to make virtual learning a bit easier for local kids in need. Mitchell Couch says he got tired of seeing his kids take over the family’s dining table with their schoolwork.

“When I was building the second desk, I thought that others might benefit from knowing how to build their own desks. I did a quick YouTube video and posted a few directions along with a materials list, hoping that it could help anybody out.”

From there, the owners of local supermarket Grocery Outlet, David McKinney, caught wind of the tutorial. And then they want to help kids in the community, especially those who are distance learning. McKinney offered to supply materials, and Couch agreed to build 35 desks.

They delivered each desk to its happy home free of charge and continue to more requests.

His selfless act has made such a positive impact on his community and hopefully helped boost those students’ grades this year!
