The veterinarian who gives free medical care to pets of the homeless

September 23, 2020

Dr. Kwane Stewart, who has been a vet for over 20 years, has spent his free time treating pets on California’s streets for free.In his spare time, he heads to impoverished areas and wanders the streets — usually in his hometown of San Diego and Los Angeles, as well as Sacramento and San Francisco — hoping to offer free vaccinations and veterinary care to pets.

Before he eventually became known as “The Street Vet,” Stewart ran an animal hospital and went on to be the county veterinarian for Stanislaus in Modesto, California, according to CCN. But when the financial crisis hit the U.S. in 2008, he was inspired to do more.

For simple treatments, Dr. Stewarts pays out of pocket and raises money through a GoFundMe page for more severe cases that require surgery or further treatment at a hospital, which can cost pet owners thousands of dollars.

Dr. Stewart explained that pets were more than companionship to the people having to surrender them. They also “offered love, hope, and security.”

He reports that working in the streets has been a “life changing and truly inspiring” experience.
